About used BMW head units & radios

BMW head units run on four major iDrive generations: CCC (2005–2008, classic spinning controller), CIC (2008–2012, faster CPU + 80 GB drive), NBT (2012–2016, touch-input controller and HD maps), and NBT EVO (2016–2019, full touchscreen + LTE + CarPlay). Picking the wrong generation for your chassis means a swap that won't boot. Every listing here calls out the exact generation in the title.

We pull head units from running cars, label them with the original FA-build option, and bench-test every menu before they ship. Maps are the most current activated USA region at time of pull. Coding (E-Sys or BimmerCode) is usually required when retrofitting into a different VIN — figure on a one-hour appointment at any BMW indie shop with E-Sys.

If you're upgrading from CIC to NBT, plan for the wiring adapter and a controller swap as well. NBT to NBT EVO is the most popular F-chassis upgrade — you'll need both the head unit and the matching CID, and a coder who knows VO swaps.

What's the difference between CIC, NBT, and NBT EVO head units?
CIC (2008–2012) runs the older iDrive 3 software with a 6.5" or 8.8" display. NBT (2012–2016) introduced touch-input on the controller, faster maps, and Bluetooth audio streaming. NBT EVO (2016+) added LTE, full touchscreen on the display, Apple CarPlay (after 2017), and a much faster CPU. Coding tools (BimmerCode, E-Sys) are required to swap between generations.
Will a head unit from another BMW model fit my car?
Often yes — BMW shares head-unit hardware across multiple chassis from the same model year. The main constraints are software variant (US vs. EU map data), trim level (basic radio vs. Professional Navigation), and CIC/NBT/EVO generation. Match the chassis code first, then the iDrive generation; coding may still be needed.
Does the head unit come with a navigation map?
All NBT and NBT EVO units we sell include the most recently activated USA map at time of pull. Updates are pushed via USB through BMW's map-update tool (free with active subscription) or through Connected Drive. CIC units may require a map activation FSC code, which we provide when available.
What do your condition grades mean?
Grade A — fully functional, light wear consistent with age, sold ready to install. Grade B — functional with cosmetic blemishes or replaced consumables noted in the listing. Grade C — functional core with significant wear; pictured as-is, suited for rebuilds. We test every electronic and powered part before listing.
