About the BMW E46
The E46 was BMW's fourth-generation 3 Series, sold 1998 through 2006 across sedan, coupe, convertible, and Touring (wagon) body styles. Engine range was M52TU, M54, and the S54 in the E46 M3. The E46 was the last 3 Series before BMW introduced iDrive — head units are physical-button radios and the Mk IV / Mk IV.5 navigation computers.
E46 is approaching classic territory. Original switchgear, interior trim, and M3-specific parts (S54 engine bits, CSL-specific items when sourced, larger M3 brakes) hold value. We pull switchgear, lighting, the original navigation heads, and the cooling-system parts (water pump, thermostat, expansion tank) most frequently replaced on a 20-year-old E46.
Subframe cracking on E46 Coupe and Convertible is well- documented — we don't sell subframes, but if your trailing arm mounts are cracking, that's a body-shop project unrelated to parts replacement. The infotainment and switchgear we sell are bolt-in with no welding required.

- Body, lighting, switchgear, and most interior parts — yes. M3-specific parts (S54 engine, SMG transmission, M3-only fenders/bumpers/sills, larger brakes, M-only seats and trim) are not interchangeable. Cosmetic and standard switchgear cross over freely.
- How do sedan, coupe, convertible, and wagon E46 parts compare?
- All four share platform, electronics, dashboard, and most engine-bay parts. Bodywork from B-pillar rearward is unique to each (Touring wagon shares more with sedan than coupe shares with convertible). Doors are different between 2-door coupe/convertible and 4-door sedan/Touring.
- What's the most common E46 part failure?
- Rear subframe cracks (especially Coupe/Convertible — check for hairline cracks at the trailing-arm mounts before the floor pan tears), cooling-system plastic (expansion tank, water pump impeller, thermostat housing), and the Mk IV navigation computer's optical drive. We stock tested replacements for all three.
- How do I find my BMW chassis code?
- Your chassis code is on the VIN plate inside the driver's door jamb, on the strut tower under the hood, and in your owner's manual under "Vehicle identification." It's a 3-character code like F30, E46, or G20 — the first letter is the platform generation and the digits are the body type. Searching by chassis is the single most reliable way to confirm BMW parts fitment.
